Amy Winehouse. To most of us who are less musically inclined, we knew her for the supposedly stupid, insane antics that she did. The funny, sometimes frightening faces she made, which the gossip media readily lapped up and dished it out to us. And we morbidly chuckled.
If most of us reading about the death of Amy Winehouse, say, "The mad, weak woman was asking for it." Then it sets off alarms bells ringing. We are becoming too dehumanised. Worse still, too ruthless and "tough" for our own good.
Amy Winehouse was a drug-addict. True. May be she was weak. May be true again. But when her father goes on national TV telling the world that the doctors have told her to quit drugs or die; it leaves a bad taste in the mouth. One expects a father to be more caring. And if he couldn't do be that; at least shut his mouth and not crave publicity.
What else happens when one has such heartless, insensitive parents? Many of us have such fathers. And mothers. And families like that. They will understand what I am saying.
Amy Winehouse craved love. She did not get it from her parents. Nor from her lovers.
The seeds of destruction perhaps lay in the genes since her birth. Or or as homeopaths say she had too many of the destructive miasms in her. May be she had a bad upbringing. A very unhappy childhood. Childhood casts long shadows on later life.
Amy, we are sorry if we laughed at your misery when you lived. May you rest in peace. And may God make us a little kinder. So that many more Amy Winehouses do not come to a tragic end in the future.

ReplyDeleteHey Look @ Me: A Song for Amy Winehouse
ReplyDeleteby Elle Beah, a Fan
Hey look @ me
High mount your
Tight-roped trapeze
I fly away high-hoped
With the damnedest of ease
I shook away
Netted ground
‘Neath my bloodlined feet
To drip away
Like crystal over heat
Hey Ma, no hands
As I drive
Without any wheels
I whizz away…
No doubt, chased; by demons @ my heels
Y’all like to watch
As we dive
To our bloodless deaths
And fade away
With some cold song
Hot upon last breaths
What’s the use of cryin
When you can sing
In the rain
My faux friend
What’s to gain in dyin
When pleasure brings
The sweetest pain
In the end
Hey look @ me
Cross the bridge
Blind-folded on one-leg
I fall away
Mind-blown
As you half-turn your head
I heard you say
You ain’t said
What you know you said
Nor done what you did
As I lay there…
Dying in your bed
What’s the worth of livin
When certainly you die
After all
Fine faux friend
What’s to gain in givin
When everything you try
Falls surely
In the end
Hey look @ me
High mount your
Stiff-roped trapeze
I bang away high-hoped
With the damnedest of ease
I shat away
Netted ground
‘Neath my quick heart beat
Melted away
Nothin to say
But all set to
Repeat
Hey, look @ me
Look @ me
Looking @ you
Look @ me
Boo @ you
Look @ me
Booing
You…
And f_ck
You too
Boo!
